Functional Medicine Q & A

What is functional medicine?

Functional medicine is a patient-centered approach to care focused on creating health by treating the whole person, not just the symptoms.

Dr. Raman spends time with you listening intently to your history, mapping your personal timeline, and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that influence long-term health and complex chronic diseases.

She uses her expertise in functional medicine to directly address the underlying cause of your disease utilizing a systems-oriented approach that includes transformative clinical concepts, original tools, and an advanced process of care.

The patient-centered approach to care creates a therapeutic partnership between you and Dr. Raman so you both work together toward the same health goals.

Am I a good candidate for functional medicine?

Whether you’re searching for a physician to help you maintain your health or you’re seeking a more holistic approach to managing a chronic illness, you may be a good candidate for functional medicine.

Dr. Raman is trained in functional and integrative medicine and treats many conditions, including:

  • Autoimmune diseases, like lupus
  • Arthritis
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Fatigue
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Excess weight and slow metabolism
  • Migraines and other headaches
  • Digestive diseases, like inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Memory loss
  • Hormonal disorders
  • Kidney disease

Dr. Raman also works with a nutritionist who received specialized training in functional nutrition. Together, they assess and address heavy metal toxicity, environmental pollutants, mold exposure, and food and environmental allergies that could impact your health.

What can I expect during a functional medicine evaluation?

You can expect comprehensive care from Dr. Raman and her nutritionist during your functional medicine evaluation. To better understand your health needs, Dr. Raman asks detailed questions about your history, genetics, and environmental and lifestyle factors that affect health.

To gather diagnostic data to further assess your health, Dr. Raman runs functional medicine testing, which may include:

  • Genetic testing
  • Specialized lipid testing
  • Hormone and nutrient imbalances
  • Stool microbiome testing

Based on the information gathered from you and your tests, Dr. Raman and the nutritionist develop a comprehensive plan tailored to your individual needs that shifts your health from illness to well-being.

Along with diet, nutrients and supplements may be prescribed to accelerate your healing process. Dr. Raman wants to help you restore balance and health and will determine the next steps and therapies to support those goals.

How often do I need follow-up care?

Dr. Raman takes a proactive approach to your health and schedules regular follow-up appointments to monitor the healing process.

Your first follow-up appointment is scheduled 6-8 weeks after your initial evaluation and then every 2-3 months until Dr. Raman identifies and heals the root cause of your disease.

To make your visits more convenient, Dr. Raman also offers virtual appointments.

Are these services covered by insurance?

Due to the current insurance model, the services offered by Dr. Raman aren’t covered by insurance.

However, you can use your health savings or flexible savings account to cover the consultation fees and services. Part of the lab testing and some prescriptions, on the other hand, may be covered.

How long is treatment?

The length of your treatment depends on your individual health needs. Some treatments may take longer than others. Healing is a journey and Dr. Raman serves as your guide to support you on your path to wellness.
